Laura Bilbao Broch - Clinical neuroscientist and science writer

The brain behind the stories

I have a Master’s in Neuroscience and a background in biomedical science. Most importantly for you, I am a medical writer & science communicator—the brain behind the stories.

Let’s be honest, nobody has time to dig through heavy research papers. Fortunately, I speak fluent data (and Spanish!). I translate dense lab findings into clear narratives so you can focus on the big picture.

I love taking the complex world of the human brain and turning it into stories that make sense to everyday people. I help medcomms agencies, premium health brands, mental health organizations, and publications communicate neuroscience and psychology with real depth, but without the jargon.

No wellness-industry spin. Just real, peer-reviewed science written with human empathy.

Whether I am writing patient education pieces that bring in 100,000+ readers on Psychology Today, or translating clinical data for research centers like FutureNeuro, I make sure your content is engaging, easy to read, and medically rock-solid.

Why Hire a Specialist Science Communicator

Scientific foundation

Not just from textbooks. As a practicing Clinical Scientist in Neuropathology and Neuroscientist I’ve spent years looking at brain tissue and clinical data. Every piece of content I write is grounded in scientific reality.

Written for humans, not algorithms

I pulled over 100,000 views in my first month writing for Psychology Today. In a world flooded with dry academic papers and robotic AI content, I prove that scientific rigour and effortless readability aren’t opposites. Your readers will finish the article.

I catch what others miss

True medical review requires a trained eye. Backed by my scientific background, I fact-check and review content so you never have to worry about accuracy. If the science is shaky or misleading, I’ll find it—protecting your brand’s reputation and building audience trust.

I translate, not simplify

I turn advanced neuroscience into clear, accessible concepts for everyday readers and medical teams alike, without ever losing precision. Your audience gets an engaging story, and your scientific board gets absolute data integrity.

Freelance Science Communicator Project · Research Institution

August 2026

The brief

FutureNeuro — Ireland’s national centre for translational brain science, hosted at RCSI and partnered with leading Irish universtities — needed a science communicator to develop and write an ongoing digital series. The goal was to bridge the gap between world-class laboratory data and public understanding.-

What I did

I co-created and developed the “Research Explained” series in close collaboration with the internal communications team. For each feature, I analyzed emerging scientific concepts from active research programmes, broke down the evidence-based data, and re-anchored the complex science back to real-world patient impact.

The result

The series officially launched with the inaugural feature live at futureneurocentre.ie, establishing a baseline for the institution’s public-facing knowledge translation strategy. Additional features are currently in development to build out the ongoing campaign.

Freelance Science Communicator Review Project · Digital Health Platform

Ongoing

The brief

MindWell World needed a scientific reviewer to fact-check and audit public-facing wellness articles covering complex neuroscientific and psychological topics. The core challenge was to protect the platform’s brand reputation by ensuring zero pseudo-science slipped through, while keeping the copy engaging for a general audience.

What I did

I meticulously reviewed digital articles for absolute scientific accuracy, cross-referencing claims against current peer-reviewed literature. I flagged overstated or misleading claims and provided adjustments that preserved accessibility without sacrificing rigour.

The result

Articles successfully launched on mindwell.ai featuring my verified reviewer credit, adding deep scientific authority to the platform’s content library. Our collaboration is fully ongoing to support their continuous content pipeline.

Advisory Board · Ingredient & Product Review

June 2026

The brief

The brain health and wellness brand behind Motivation: Encapsulated—a complex, 20+ ingredient cognitive supplement—required independent, expert scientific review. They needed a neuroscientist to evaluate the evidence-based efficacy of their formulation, audit ingredient safety profiles, and identify any potential biomedical risks.

What I did

I cross-referenced each active ingredient against current peer-reviewed research to verify its cognitive performance claims. After trialling the physical product, I provided independent expert input on the formulation, specifically flagging potential contraindications with prescriptive medications and highlighting key risk factors regarding hormonal conditions.

The result

My independent scientific input fed directly into the brand’s refined formulation and safety strategy, cementing the product’s market credibility. The formal consultation concluded in June 2026, with priority consideration secured for the brand’s future pipeline.

Medical Accuracy Review Project - Pharma Communications

Ongoing

The brief

A pharmaceutical communications agency required a rigorous scientific audit of a high-value media asset package for a Multiple Sclerosis treatment. The deliverables—comprising a professional slide deck, an educational white paper, and an informational video script—needed accuracy verification before public and clinical release.

What I did

I cross-referenced every clinical claim across all three assets against 19+ anchor scientific publications. I systematically classified each statement as PASS or FAIL, appended detailed contextual annotations, flagged hidden data discrepancies, and delivered a clear, colour-coded validation matrix for the entire media package.

The result

I achieved a 93–97% alignment index across 155 total analytical data comparisons. Key clinical discrepancies were successfully documented and returned to the communications team for precise revision, safeguarding the campaign’s medical integrity.

Frequently Asked Questions for a Science Communicator

Do I really need a neuroscientist for my health or science content?
Not always, but it depends on what’s at stake. If your content makes specific scientific or clinical claims, references complex studies, or could mislead readers if oversimplified, a generalist writer will easily miss critical errors. For lighter lifestyle content with no technical claims, a generalist may be enough.
The deciding factor isn’t the topic; it’s whether being wrong will cost you your brand’s credibility. High-paying brands hire me because they want to build bulletproof authority that easily passes both search engine algorithms and medical board scrutiny.
Absolutely not, I refuse. A copywriter is trained to persuade. A traditional scientist is trained to write for journals. As a science communicator, I am trained to translate—taking complex, evidence-based information and making it intensely engaging without distorting it.
My entire philosophy is that scientific rigour and effortless readability aren’t opposites. The best science writing borrows persuasive techniques without sacrificing precision: it is compelling because it is clear, not because it overstates. It is an editorial approach that successfully secured over 100,000 views in my very first month writing for Psychology Today.
Neuroscience, psychology, and mental health are my specialisms, spanning everything from molecular and clinical research to behavioural science and patient-facing communication.
I partner with forward-thinking digital health platforms, mental health apps, consumer science publications, and multi-university research networks (like FutureNeuro Ireland).
I specialize in consumer-facing articles, patient education campaigns, multimedia scripts, and high-level knowledge translation for scientific or corporate teams. I do not take on dry regulatory, clinical trial reporting, or compliance paperwork.
Every claim is systematically traced back to its primary source—the actual study or dataset—rather than a secondary summary or press release that may have already overstated the finding. I verify what the study showed, the size and quality of the evidence, and whether the language used matches what the data supports. Where a claim is contested or preliminary, that gets reflected in the writing rather than smoothed over.
Whether I’m auditing a health tech script or a pharma communications campaign—where I’ve previously run up to 155 data comparisons across 19+ anchor journals—I ensure precision before your piece goes live.
I bring a deep scientific foundation to your project, not just a casual interest in science. I hold an MSc in Cognitive Neuroscience alongside peer-reviewed publications in elite journals like NeuroImage and Frontiers in Behavioral Neuroscience.
Additionally, my background as a clinical scientist in neuropathology means I spent years processing real specimens and analyzing complex medical data alongside Consultant Pathologists. The science in your content is never filtered through someone else’s interpretation first; it comes directly from an expert who reads and evaluates primary research as a native language.
